A Southern Pacific train enters the railroad’s West Colton Yard after traversing Cajon Pass on the Palmdale Cutoff. This eastbound train is led by a pair of Union Pacific SD40-2s (3213 and 3235), teamed with SP SD39 5320 and a U33C. The weather on this April day is typical of weather in the 1970s – gray and hazy thanks to unregulated air pollution. This isn’t all smog, of course, but there is smog in the overcast, causing burning eyes and often difficult breathing. Thank goodness for the Air Quality Management District, which has made a huge difference in southern California’s air quality! (Colton, California – April 27, 1978)
