| North Star is a broad gauge locomotive. It was built in 1837 for the New Orleans and Carrollton Railroad in the USA by Robert Stephenson and Company. The locomotive was intended for use on a new 130 mile route to St Francisville, Louisiana. The route was cancelled, but North Star was still shipped to the USA. It was destined for a broad gauge railway in New York but was never unloaded, and was returned to the UK. GWR purchased the locomotive and had it modified to run on the GWR's broad gauge. North Star was delivered to the GWR on 28th November 1837. North Star was rebuilt with new cylinders and a new boiler. The engine was scrapped at Swindon in 1906. This full size replica was built at the Swindon Works in 1925 to the 1837 specifications. It was built to celebrate 100 years of the railway. With four other GWR locomotives, it took part in the Stockton and Darlington Railway Centenary Cavalcade. The replica uses some parts from the original locomotive. |
