Remarks & Notes
The Shark River Drawbridge is a bascule style moveable bridge built by the New York and Long Branch Railroad in 1937. It carries NJ Transit’s North Jersey Coast Line over the mouth of the Shark River between the towns of Belmar and Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ. Between the years of 2013 and 2014, the bridge was rehabilitated by replacing the original wooden piers of the fixed approach spans with more sturdy concrete ones. The bridge is seen here carrying Long Branch to Bay Head train 4745 westbound over the waters of the Shark River in Belmar. In the background, you can see the NJ Route 71 moveable bridge open while undergoing testing for the upcoming summer months.
