Trinity Over The Trinity (River). It was 24 years ago today, on December 30, 1996, Dallas Area Rapid Transit opened the first commuter rail line in the southwestern United States. On that first day, more than 4,000 people rode the train on the former Rock Island Line. Since then annual ridership, as reported by DART/Trinity Railway Express, grew from a little more than 175,000 in 1997 to over 2 million in 2018.
