Special Freight Move. Monson Railroad Locomotive #3 makes a reverse move on the WW&F main line at Alna Center with a special freight load, during a January, 2021 Lerro Productions photo shoot. Although the primary focus of the shoot was an authentic WW&F mixed train behind WW&F #9, the photographers elected to pony up the cash to steam up Monson #3, given that she was visiting at the WW&F campus. As a result, the museum folks were able to cook up an extra train for the photographers to enjoy, in this case, a special freight move, featuring the historic boiler of WW&F Locomotive #9 and a stationary steam engine. That's Brakeman Bryce Weeks manning the brakes on Flat Car #118, and Engineman Roger Whitney doing the honors on the throttle of #3.
Monson #3 is a 1912-vintage Vulcan Forney, and a veteran of Maine's 6-mile Monson Railroad, which hauled slate from quarries to a connection with the standard gauge Bangor & Aroostook Railroad until 1941. The 3 was rescue from the scrappers and became part of the Edaville Railroad collection in South Carver, MA for some 50 years, before being acquired by the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company and Museum, which owns her today.
