Along the old Colorado Midland After Union Pacific closed Colorado’s Tennessee Pass as a through route on August 23, 1997, it still operated a once-a-week local from Pueblo to Malta, near Leadville for about eighteen months. On January 9, 1998, Union Pacific’s Malta local, led by Rio Grande EMD GP40 No. 3075, has just went through Americus, and is passing by one of the tunnels formerly used by Colorado Midland Railway on its parallel route at this location. CM ceased operations in 1918, with this portion of the abandoned right-of-way now utilized by County Road 371.
