At 1,500 horsepower per F unit, an A-B-A set of Lackawanna locomotives sits one B unit shy of power needed to match that of the Union Pacific's 6,000 horsepower 4-8-8-4 Big Boy, sitting by its side. The A-B-A set of F units, however, are about 20' longer than the Big Boy, or just over 70' if there were another B unit. Today's modern diesel locomotives like the EMD SD90MAC match the Big Boy at 6,000 horsepower, though EMD's DDA40X, which were built in 1969 and exclusively used by Union Pacific were rated at 6,600 horsepower!
