Fun On The Forstburg Flyer. The restoration and operation of Western Maryland Scenic Railroad 1309 (née-Chesapeake & Ohio 1309, H-6, 2-6-6-2, Baldwin, 1949) is story that has dominates rail preservation news in 2022. This class of 10 "Mallet" steam engine was delivered while EMD was already producing diesels for most American railroads in quantity. After a very short career on the rails, it was brought to the B&O Railroad Museum, where it stayed until coming to WMSR 2014. A complete restoration to operating status was completed earlier this year, and this unit now serves as regular power on the railroad's tourist trains. On Sunday, June 5, 2022, WMSR 1309 is being watered at the Cumberland, Maryland station before returning to the Ridgeley, West Virginia yard after running to Frostburg, Maryland to await its next assignment. Although never owned by the Western Maryland Railroad, the Mallet has been painted with the WM's "fireball" to match the environs, including the restored 1913 station building.
