Yellow Nose Pair On A Sunny Morning. On August 31, 2022, a pair of dual mode powered MTA LIRR trains with LI 504 and 514 (DM30AC, EMD, 1999) met in Middle Village, Queens, New York with the Manhattan skyline in the background. Of 23 DM30ACs delivered, 20 are still active on the LIRR's roster, intended to be assigned to runs from terminals like Oyster Bay, Port Jefferson, and even Montauk in season to allow a one-seat ride from diesel territory into New York Penn Station. One additional DM30AC has had its third rail gear removed and joins 23 DE30ACs that are diesel powered only, and this in general restricted from operating directly into Penn Station.
Locomotive-hauled trains extend LIRR service from Midtown New York to the eastern reaches of the North and South Forks. Power has gone through four generations since steam service ended.
