Amtrak heater car HC 12 is seen at the BN diesel facilities at Minneapolis Jct. (Harrison St.) In the early years of Amtrak BN handled servicing here for them. This heater car was originally modified by Great Northern Ry. from an F7 B unit. Amtrak like GN & BN, used these cars to help provide enough steam heat on transcontinental passenger trains such as the Empire Builder. In some cases GN substituted freight power for aging F units and added these to make steam for the passenger trains.
