A Tower Operator's View. The survival of WC Tower in Waldwick, New Jersey to the present day is something of a miracle combined with perseverance. The tower is named the "Harvey Springstead Memorial Signal Tower" in memory of the Erie Railroad engineer and great great grandfather of Curtis Springstead, the main organizer behind the present day preservation efforts with the Waldwick Historical Society. Built in 1886 and closed in 1986, it took almost three decades of volunteer and grant-enabled work for the restored building to open as a museum in 2016. On Thursday, March 23, 2023, brand new NJ Transit Alstom ALP-45DP 4556 passes by the window where the tower operator controlled the interlocking and watched this same view for almost a century on the former Erie Main Line heading toward Suffern, New York. That morning, a group of volunteers cleared vegetation on the right of the photo that allows for this view to continue to be available.
