A Southern Pacific freight approaches its Chicago destination at LaVergne in Berwyn, Illinois, on Burlington Northern’s busy Aurora to Chicago triple-track main line on May 28, 1992. A trio of Rio Grande EMD locomotives, in various states of filthiness, power the eastbound train. Leading the way is a former Conrail GP40, now Rio Grande 3148 and painted black and orange, instead of Aspen gold. Trailing is Rio Grande’s only GP35 decorated with the large billboard logo on the long hood, and third out is a dirty GP40 No. 3060 that still carries a small logo.
