The Old And The New. The North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL) was a dual railroad operated line, with the Central Railroad of New Jersey and Pennsylvania Railroad both providing service on the "New York & Long Branch". When NJ TRANSIT GP40PH-2 4109 (née CNJ 3677, EMD, 10/1968) was repainted into its as delivered 1968 paint scheme by NJT nearly four years ago in October, 2019, many railfans hoped for this retro scene to be recreated. On Monday, July 3, 2023, it became a reality as the veteran EMD led a number of shuttle trains between Long Branch, NJ and Bay Head, NJ on the NJCL under the enhanced summer schedule. The veteran locomotive sits in the Bay Head Yard for a brief moment before heading back to Long Branch. Ironically, it is next to Alstom ALP45DPA 4535, the first of the most recent generation of motive power to arrive on the railroad.
