Southern Remains. On a rainy afternoon in Central Georgia, this hidden gem rusts away with time hidden in the backwoods of Wadley. Mother Nature has reclaimed most of the area, as trees have grown on the right of way and inside the gauge. This SW1 was built in the 1950’s for the Georgia and Florida Railway. Then in the 60’s continued its life on the Southern, who claimed the Georgia and Florida Railway. In the 1980s it was leased to a shortline called the Louisville and Wadley. The railroad hasn’t turned a wheel in a few decades, resulting the 1004 to be left behind in the Georgia woods for Mother Nature to claim. As someone who has explored many abandoned places and things, this has to be possibly one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. It’s amazing seeing a remaining tuxedo painted locomotive that has lasted this long outside of a museum, and being abandoned for many decades without being full of graffiti like all the other abandoned places I’ve been to. Rumor has it there is also an abandoned boxcar somewhere along the line as well.
Selected photos of locomotives, passenger cars, and rolling stock in the Southern's livery as well as other assets once belonging to or used by the Southern.
