Two Halves.
New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) R62 no. 1345 (Kawasaki, 1983-1985) is seen on the end of an out-of-service (3) train at 145th St Station on the IRT Lenox Avenue Line. The train is waiting for a revenue move to enter Harlem-148th St before moving into Lenox Yard. At left is some signage that is unique in the subway system, reminding conductors to only open the doors on the front half of the train - 145th St is the only half-length station left in the system.
It was planned for the Lenox Line to connect with the Jerome Ave (Woodlawn) Line via 145th St, but this never came to fruition. Early subway stations were built to be 6 cars long, though it was very quickly realized that 10 car trains would be needed to meet the ridership demand. This station was never extended as it sits between two interlockings, and any extension to 10-car length would encroach on their limits. The station was to be closed upon the opening of 148th St-Lenox Terminal, but community opposition led to it staying open in its original state.
