Remarks & Notes
Hooping Up Orders

As an eastbound Southern Pacific Railroad freight, led by Cotton Belt SD45T-2 9269, departs Hiland, at the summit of Cajon Pass, the conductor grabs his trainorders from the hoop, the arms of which are springing back. The string holding the paperwork blows in wind as the crewman pulls it in through the window of SP C-40-50 bay-window caboose 1639 (built by Whitehead & Kales in early 1964). This was how railroad communication was performed for over a century, before being phased out as technology advanced. (Cajon Pass, California - July 2, 1978)
