Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to the Vale of Rheidol Railway. The 12-mile railway was originally constructed in 1902 to connect the lead mines to the sea. Since the 1930s, however, the line has been used almost exclusively for tourism. It is interesting to note that this was the last line to be operated by steam as part of the nationalized British Railways. Locomotive #9 "Prince of Wales" is preparing for another journey up to Devil's Bridge. Initially, the platform that Laura is standing on was used by the GWR for standard gauge trains headed south. Now it is the starting point for the journey of this narrow gauge attraction.
