On a bright April 1980 day, an eastbound Union Pacific freight climbs out of San Bernardino as it approaches the steep grades of Cajon Pass. Power for this train consists of DDA40X 6941, DDA40X 6938 and C30-7 2450, for a combined 16,200 horsepower! Within a few months, the UP's fleet of DDA40X diesels would be taken out of service. By May 1980 twenty-five of the oldest units would be stored, with the rest joining the deadlines by August of that year. 6941 and 6938 would return to service, however, for an all-too short time in 1984 before they were all retired permanently.
