Standing 222 feet above the gulch below and spanning 796 feet, Marent Trestle is truly a sight to behold. When a 150-man work force completed the trestle in 1883, it was the highest structure on the 2,045-mile NP system. Some said it was the largest wooden structure in the world. A year later the permanent trestle, made out of iron, was put into service. 135 years later this crucial cog in the Northern Pacific system still towers over the landscape, hosting mostly the MRL's gas train and various eastbound empty trains. A testament to the crews that built this trestle, over the years it hasn't had the need for any major renovations, some abutment work and new catwalk is about all its received. An iconic piece of American engineering.
