Back in the day, the procedure for Southern and Western Railway of Alabama trains passing through Opelika included a full stop at the crossing of the two lines. After a crew member ascertained there were no other trains approaching the crossing, fusees would be lit and placed on either side of the crossing. Only then could the trains proceed. Wasn't too hard on Southern, but northbound (eastbound pre-CSX) trains on WofA had a tough climb from a full stop to get out of town. In the photo, train 208 is just getting back underway after its full stop and some local work.
