Morning mixed to Baker. A morning mixed train from Prairie City to Baker City passes a short work train at Hawley Spur, about 4 miles east of Sumpter. The power on the mixed is Sumpter Valley's Mikado #19, a 1920 Alco Product which is original to the line. On the work train this fine morning is Eccles Lumber Heisler #3, which interestingly enough, is also original to the line. The original Sumpter Valley Railway was owned by relatives of the folks who operated Eccles Lumber and the two lines interchanged. Although both engines spent decades outside Oregon after the original Sumpter Valley Railway was dismantled, both found their way back here with the present-day tourist line was establish. The 19 had been preserved on a dead-line up at the White Pass & Yukon, and the 3 was preserved in a shed in Cascade, Idaho by the Boise Cascade Company.
