General Motors Electro-Motive Division built only 21 GP39 locomotives, with 20 of them going to the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. (The only other was built for Florida's Atlanta & St. Andrews Bay Railroad. Also, two GP39DCs were built, as well, utilizing a DC main generator, for Kennecott Copper Company.) The GP39 was a derivative of the GP38 equipped with a turbocharged EMD 645E3 12-cylinder engine which generated 2,300 hp (1.72 MW). C&O GP39 3912 was built in July 1969, and would eventually become CSX Transportation 4292, and later Copper Basin Railway 503. On an adjacent track is C&O U25B 8104 (ex-2504).
