Remarks & Notes
Spring is barely in evidence on May 15, 1972 as Milwaukee Road GP9 211 accelerates across the James River bridge at Yankton, S.D., with an eastbound for Sioux City, Iowa. Dating from 1875, this line will survive the railroad’s 1980 bankruptcy to be acquired by the state of South Dakota, then sold to Burlington Northern. Grain traffic will keep polishing the rails well into a new century when an Ethanol boom will ensure the line’s long-term survival.
