AAR trucks, but no rotating light housing, a dead giveaway for an ex C&O classic.
Originally L&N and then SBD, this early phase U30B was actually on the point of a southbound freight doing some switching.
Newly repainted and probably on borrowed time, this unit is far away from the high priority freights it was purchased for.
L&N acquired only four U28Cs. They were later upgraded to 3000HP and fortunately looked unchanged.
BN 5450, a former U28B mates up with a U25B at North La Crosse, Wis. on a cool spring day. Although the paint job is less than a year old, it is already peeling a bit. This unit was made famous by... (more)
Southbound through freight 865 bursts from the south portal of 6,544-foot Hagans Tunnel in 1974. Ahead is the switchback that will turn the train 90 degrees left and raise it just over 100 feet in... (more)
Seaboard System U25C's 1522 and 1521, along with U30C #1482, ease up to the yard office for a rolling crew change (notice the new flagman on the ground to the right waiting on the caboose). #1522... (more)
Dead and shoved to the end of track was not a sign of the demise of this unit. These would carry on a few more years.
Busy day at Wimpey Minerals Quarry. The Rockrunner power sits idle on the siding while the U23B switches a cut of cars.
Northbound departing train is probably a turn/local to Patio Yard, as evidenced by the mixed freight. I like the matched set of gloriously unmuffled chuggers.
A pair of C&O U-Boats, both with some carbody doors open, are seen on the B&OCT through Hammond. Tom Golden photo.
Oh they were turkeys but four of them on a big coal train was sweet music nevertheless. This southbound is nearing the end of double track on its trek to a powerplant somewhere.
I guess I like the oddballs. This unit started out on the Monon and somewhere along the line lost its upper headlight housing. Everything was apparently all right until CSX painters came along.
It won't be be CSXT for long. Built for SAL, this unit had been SCL, SBD and was now ready go to probably its last owner Nashville & Eastern. Being in the early carbody, which resembled the U28B... (more)
While we were in town to buy an industrial 65-ton GE this great looking nee-L&N, ex- SBD unit passed by. Few ended up looking this good. The smoke was a nice touch I think.
