During the winter of 1988-89, intense winter conditions in Oregon's Blue Mountains created havoc for Union Pacific. Trains were detoured over Southern Pacific's Modoc Line and via the Feather River Canyon and Oregon Trunk to get around the problems. A UP detour via Keddie is pictured on Burlington Northern at Stronghold, where BN's ex-Great Northern line crossed SP.
