Southern Pacific #99 to Amtrak #14

Southern Pacific’s famed Coast Daylight (Los Angeles to San Francisco) lives on as Amtrak’s Coast Starlight (Los Angeles to Seattle). Passing Mission Tower as train 14 leaves L.A.’s Union Station, the Starlight is powered by SDP40Fs 568 and 543 on this April 26, 1977, morning. (Two days earlier, Amtrak 543 was the diesel that accompanied American Freedom Train 4-8-4 4449 on Amtrak’s Transcontinental Steam Excursion when it arrived in L.A. Coincidentally, the Transcontinental Steam Excursion, once again pulled by AFT 4449, will be following train #14 up the California coast to San Luis Obispo this day.)
