From 1898 until the terminal's major reconstruction in the mid-1980s, banks of lower quadrant semaphores protected the approaches to Boston's South Station. Penn Central E8 4268 led a Providence-bound commuter train of ex-New Haven coaches through the station throat on a May evening.
