In the summer before Amtrak, a westbound Penn Central train out of Boston approaches the station at Mystic, CT. All three PC components are represented in the consist of an ex-PRR E8, and ex-NYC baggage car, and an ex-NH grill car and coaches.
The three biggest passenger carriers - Pennsylvania, New York Central, and New Haven - merged to create the ill-fated Penn Central, whose passenger losses and poor service led to the formation of Amtrak and state-owned commuter lines.
