One of Southern Pacific’s "Haulers," short-haul freights that transferred cars between yards, large or small, departed the railroad’s West Colton Yard eastbound, as all departures do. But westbounds, such as this 29-car train, round the balloon track at the east end of the yard and reverse direction, as this train is doing. Today’s train has a typically eclectic mix of power, so common on the SP in the 70s and 80s, with SP GP35R 6331 (ex-GP35 6613, originally SP 7716) teamed with SP B30-7 7853 and SP SD40T-2 8366 – EMDs and GEs, 4-axles and 6-axles, locos from the 60s and 70s – to haul these cars to whichever southern California yard they are destined.
