Another view from my Covid gallery of trains close to home over the past year. This is number four of the series. The NWP crosses four moveable bridges in its short run from the Cal Northern interchange at Lombard to the feed mills in Petaluma. This is the oldest, dating from 1910 and in continuous use for 110 years. It crosses the Petaluma River at Blackpoint. In this view a westbound train waits for the bridge to close. It had been closed waiting for the train, but a couple small boats came along and the bridge had to open, delaying the train. Boats have the right of way. But it gave me an chance to get this picture. In the old days the bridge tender (and trainorder operator) had to row out to the center pier to climb up into the control room, but today remote controls have been placed at the Novato end of the bridge making the operation much easier. The bridge has survived numerous barge strikes and seems to still work pretty well, except during hot weather it gets a bit cranky.
