Missabe Remains. DMIR 409 and GTW 5934 lead a rail train on the Iron Range Subdivision through Biwabik, as the old Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Biwabik Roundhouse still stands strong in the background. The Roundhouse is still used to this day by maintenance-of-way equipment. The yard in Biwabik was taken out in the 1980’s or so. Being a rare event for the Iron Range subdivision. Not only a rail train on the Iron Range Subdivision, but with a former DMIR SD40T-3. The day before this event, the original leader being GTW 5934 solo broke down in Adolph, Minnesota. So the train had to be rescued and taken into Proctor Yard. DMIR 409 was placed on the point, and took the train north the next day, with 5934 dead in tow. Most of the time in recent the DMIR SD40T-3’s and other EMD’s do not make it to the Iron Range Sub anymore, considering all the Iron Range Sub trains have the former CNW C40-8’s workhorses on them. So a former DMIR SD40T-3 going past a old DMIR Roundhouse and yard, on a rail train makes for a once in a blue moon occasion and a very historic photo.
