Remarks & Notes
The John Bull

In 1939, The Pennsylvania Rail Road built a replica of the 1831 John Bull locomotive that was built for predecessor Camden & Amboy. The original had been sold by the PRR to the Smithsonian in 1884, where it resides today as the oldest operable steam locomotive in the world. When the Pennsy desired to display and possibly operate the original as a publicity tool, the Smithsonian declined, forcing the PRR to build the replica. Now part of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania collection, it made several appearances under steam on the Strasburg in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Here it steams east of Strasburg with one of the oldest wooden passenger cars in the US, 1855-built combination car from the Cumberland Valley.
