Caltrain's leased SP GP9 3187, painted in a unique scheme to mark Caltrain taking over operation of the Peninsula commute service, leads train #24 past the abandoned California Canners & Growers cannery in Sunnyvale on April 13, 1985. While the train's engine and cars are traditional SP commute equipment, the two-digit train number reflects Caltrain's new timetable and the start of many changes for the service. There's no future for the CC&G cannery, though, as it will be torn down in two months and replaced with apartment buildings. Kodachrome 64
Where once there was only one commuter carrier, Southern Pacific between San Jose and San Francisco, today there are three: Caltrain (former SP), Altamont Commuter Express, and the newest, SMART (Sonoma-Marin Rapid Transit).
