Remarks & Notes
While Union Pacific never painted a locomotive for the American Bicentennial, they did, however, loan E9A 951 to the Preamble Express, a special train that was to be used in the final planning for the planned American Freedom Train. EMD, one of the sponsors of this train (along with UP), painted 951 in a red, white and blue scheme for this service, which lasted from August 1974 to November 1974. The Preamble Express traveled around the country setting up the itinerary for the American Freedom Train. The 951 was returned to the UP in December 1974, still wearing these markings, and UP put it back in service on their officers' trains and other passenger specials, even though it did not carry any UP markings. Union Pacific usually placed 951 on the point, as seen leading an Old Timer's Special into Long Beach, California, on September 21, 1976. The Old timer’s Convention was held on the RMS Queen Mary, visible behind UP 951. Union Pacific repainted the 951 back to Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Gray in August 1977.
